A game side project I've been working on

I had a strange idea. As I was casting about for things to do with Sim-Arboreal and IsoSurface, the idea of some ground-eye level critter trying to find his way around kind of appealed to me. After composing a sad song and some brainstorming, a story started to emerge about a poor frog who has lost his way. In fact, this totally buried (at least temporarily) any ideas I had related to my original hover-bike ideas.

Anyway, I’ve been poking at this in my spare time for the past few weeks or so. @nehon was nice enough to supply me with a wonderful frog (soon to be animated) and I’ve been making decent progress. This weekend I finally got collisions working with the rocks and trees which is a pretty big deal.

So, I put up a test build. Keep in mind that it’s really rough around the edges so far.

One big known issue is that the water filter doesn’t work on Macs so you’ll have to toggle the settings HUD on and go and turn it off.

Keys:

Mouse - looks

W - moves forward

S - charges a jump. Once charged, moving forward again will jump. If you press and hold ‘S’ will in mid-jump you will continue to jump at a default power. Useful for getting around like a frog.

Space - switches off movement and turns the mouse cursor on so you can select stuff.

Shift - in free flight mode, shift makes you fly faster. Ctrl+shift will make you fly super fast.

F3 - Opens the settings HUD. Different panels control different aspects of the visualization. For example, the “Sound” panel can be used to adjust the sound volume. The “Camera” panel can be used to turn off “frog mode” and therefore allow free flight.

F4 - Opens/closes the Debug HUD text in the upper left.
F5 - Opens/closes the standard JME stats

F12 - Toggles video recording on/off
PrtScrn/Scroll Lock - saves a screen shot

Known issues:
-No loading screen. You will start with a black screen then it dumps you right into the game and the world isn’t even fully loaded yet. Test build.

-As mentioned, water filter doesn’t work on a Macs right now. Press F3 to turn on settings. Press “space” to enable the mouse. Go to the “Filters” tab and turn off the toggle next to “Water Filter”.

-in free flight mode, if you fly too fast you accumulate some memory leaks and eventually the app will slow down and crash.

-Cannot charge a jump while standing on a rock. For some reason, hitting ‘S’ will just jump immediately.

-The jump charge indicator does not accurately indicate where you will fly or land. It’s close sometimes.

-The crawling sound stutters sometimes when going down hill.

-Jumping up hill can be a little weird as the hill will instantly stop your jump.

-You can currently climb up hills that are too steep for the final game. Don’t get used to the short cuts. Smiley

-Similarly, jump+crawling can sometimes get you places you also won’t be able to go in the final game.

-You may clip and be able to see through the ground.

-The tree line is currently too low so there are some treeless areas that will be forested in the final game.

-Probably literally hundreds of other things…

If you are curious, the final goal for our poor little frog will be somewhere around location 2049, 93, 2092. When the game is ready for an ending, there will be a giant tree there (at least 3x or 4x times as big as any other tree) and your frog-family waiting for you. For now it’s just a spot on the ground but it should give you an indication of one of the many paths this poor little frog will have to make to get there… and there aren’t even any obstacles/predators/etc. yet.

Next immediate concerns: tongue mechanic and water/puddles/ponds not at sea level. (Our frog will have to stay moist.)

As the game gets closer to “playable” for real, I will stop posting test builds as it is my hope to earn a little cash with this if it turns out to be decent. I kind of think the micro-perspective hasn’t been well explored yet in games and it’s an interesting problem/scenario.

Because people will ask “Why Dragonfly Odyssey?” You play a frog but your friend will be a dragonfly. She will help you find stuff that you will need to get home. After all, when you are at frog’s eye level, it helps to have a friend that can fly around.

Thanks. Yeah, I could spend forever tweaking the visuals and I still have a lot of ideas… but I will concentrate on the game part for a while. I think if I get a playable game then people will forgive me as I tweak the visuals. :slight_smile: I have ideas for a cellular automata based cloud layer that I will open source as part of my SimFX package… but it will be a while.

P.S.: There are sounds and music… so maybe that wasn’t working for you for some reason. :-/

Awesome concept :smiley: . I just wish my computer would be better. The game runs at around 13 FPS for me :frowning: .
Also I recommend making a path for the frog in the final game because it get’s really irretating if you can’t see where you came from or where you’re heading.
And the grass texture looks bad up close, but like you said you haven’t put much time into the visuals.
Anyway I would totally buy this when it comes out. I think it will be a nice adventure and I also think that it doesn’t need enemies at all … but thats just my opinion. Maybe you find a great way of implementing a nice challange into it :slight_smile: .

However, when I launch the app, I can set up the settings, but when I press Continue it only shows a black screen for like 2 seconds, I hear some sounds (music & ambient stuff I guess), then it crashes.

I mean, I have worked quite a lot on the visuals but there is always more to do. High-detail near grass is one of those things. It wasn’t really designed to be looked at from 2 cm away at ground level. :slight_smile:

In the real game, you will expend energy for the things you do. You will have to find water to replenish your moisture, eat food when you get hungry, etc… A few bad guys to bypass or avoid will be part of the danger. The plan is that little mini-quests will also give you special abilities… for example, even the jump indicator won’t be there when you start as you will have to learn to jump through a mini-quest first. A sort of compass will be one thing. Some kind of map will be another such special ability but I’m not sure what form it will take yet. It may show you a track of where you’ve been. You may also be able to get other creatures to fill in sections for you. Hard to say just yet.

Ultimately there will be a day-night cycle, probably synchronized to the story progression, and other story-advancing elements… some mini-quest related, some not. I may also use the tongue mechanic for more than just eating… depends on how it turns out and if it’s fun or not.

Heheh. Yeah, the only post effects I may turn on in the final game are light scattering (if I can find settings that don’t look bad) and FXAA (if the user hasn’t selected AA already). Shadows kill the frame rate and I will do them a different way or possibly limit real shadows to only the immediate surroundings and use baked or drop shadows everywhere else. (Shadows + instanced leaves are busted right now anyway.)

Were you able to run the previous things I’ve released like Sim-Arboreal or the IsoSurfaceDemo? That might help me narrow down which shader is at issue at least.

Actually the post effects doesn’t affect performance that bad, since it’s pretty bad to start with :slight_smile:
I started the game, hit F3, space, disabled the water filter, F3 and space again, so all these FPS numbers are from the initial view, given without post-effects / with all post effects

idk but when using MSAA I couldn’t really see any Depth of view effect, didn’t dig into that, maybe the MSAA turns it off or maybe FXAA enhances it much but it was a lot more pronounced in the last test-case.

In all cases if I looked straight down at the ground FPS close to doubles, the grass seems to eat a lot of processing.

In my playing around with JOGL code I know that the number of draw calls is a killer for my AMD, way worse than nVidia, I can throw a lot of triangles at it if I batch but 3-digit number of draw calls is impossible in 16 ms :confused:

I haven’t tested it yet but Khronos have a reference compiler for shaders, maybe that can be of help to see if the shader is flawed or the Intel driver (although I’ll bet it’s the Intel driver).

Nothing a shader does should crash the driver. So the driver is absolutely without a doubt buggy. I just don’t know what bug I’m triggering.

Thanks for the performance numbers. I never run with AA so I didn’t know what kind of hit that would cause. I generally run with defaults and that’s what my screen shots are taken with.

Grass is batched and there are only a few ‘drawables’ associated with it at any given time. On average, 9 total with only 3 to 6 in view at any given time. Still, the trees and rocks are instanced which may run slower on some cards, I guess. I’m not sure there is much I can do about it, though, unfortunately.

Same marching cubes as the IsoSurface demo but the fractal is way simpler. But really, none of that should cause lag as that’s done on the background threads. The only lag I ever see is from GC and I’ve tried my best to keep that to a minimum.

The only thing that is done in the main thread is the actual scene graph attachment. Perhaps it is just overwhelming your CPU at times? Another thing to try is turning on vsync and see if you maintain 60 FPS. I run with vsync on all the time so I might not notice any high-frame-rate-related issues. I limit what is added per frame and it’s possible that some combination of “main frame stealing CPU time” combined with “too many things added per second” happens when running at high frame rates.

I run it in a MacBook Pro and have the water shader error (like warned in the first post)… I don’t check the music at the time I posted, but they are working fine too.

I still think you should improve the “frog mode” a little bit, cause using that camera mode cause me dizzy quickly :stuck_out_tongue:
