An indie project - Forging Life

Hey

We are a couple of guys working on an indie project called Forging Life. It is a role playing sandbox game in an early alpha stage, but its coming along.

Its a spare time project so we where happy to find that there was a free and easy to use 3d engine like JMonkeyEngine out there. Thank you for that!

Well, enough talk. Here is our first video showing some of the core functionality

Hey, thats looking great! Thanks for passing by and showing this. All the best for this project, looks very promising!

P.S. If you want a group on this site for your game to gather some testers and attention to your project just tell us.

Hey that’s looking really good.

So can you tell us a bit about what the player will be doing in it?

I’m looking forward to seeing your progress on it

So what will the game be about? Its a singleplayer RPG I guess?

Its great to hear that you seem to like what we have done so far

We have been working on the concepts for this game for a long time but we have struggled quite a bit to find a proper development setup. Its a spare time project so we want the development process to be fun and allow for fast results. C, C++ and Directx was out of the question for us because of lag of experience and the low level approach. We found that C# offers a great language but XNA came a bit short for developers like us that have limited graphics programming skills (and its getting very phone oriented). Silverlight or WPF was easy but created for normal business gui and very small games. Mogre (The .net version of Ogre) looked great but the wrapping made it a painfull experience. We tried a lot of engines for .net without ever finding “The One”.

Then we saw JMonkeyEngine and tried it out and liked the abstraction level alot. We were able to do use the JME framework as a support to our game concept and go far with very limited 3d knowledge. It is much more inspiring having to learn more advanced stuff when there is already a working 3d prototype running. So thank you for doing a great work on jMonkeyEngine and its tools.

We are still on a very early stage and we worry about the basic game mechanics like water balance decreasing over time leading to the char getting sick and eventually dying etc. So that the current “gameplay” :). We try to make it as much as a framework as possible so if the player will get sick from eating a poisonous plant so will a NPC doing the same.

The plans for the gameplay however is to provide the player with a sandbox. We want to create a world that offers a wide range of possibilities and let the players create the gameplay themselves.

The game will always involve the basic gameplay concerning survival in the world. The first concern would be food and water. The player can eat berries and fruit of the ground and survice on this. This will keep the player from dying from hunger but the poor quality food could start affecting Morale leading to low Concentration etc. The water from the nearby lake could be a bit dirty so the player might start feeling sick unless they build a fireplace and boil the water. A better weapon or a perhaps small house could help handling the wolfs at night. Its also getting a bit cold at night. NPCs will travel accross the land and might stay for some time if the player offers food and a warm bed. They might offer a good deal etc.

We are not aiming for the casual gameplay. Want a quite advanced crafting system, medical system, economics, politics and much more. There is no shortage of ideas (or wild and crazy ambitions)…

Hello

Im the second developer of the game. The group that is mentioned, what will that mean for us? Where can we read about it?

Have a look here: http://hub.jmonkeyengine.org/groups/tag/game

All of these are “groups” which can also have their own forum and track things like twitter feeds and rss blogs to display all the latest info about your game.

It's like the one they setup for Mythruna all those many months ago. It's a separate section of the JME forum just for your game.

Normen and I are now down to less than 10 seconds apart in our posts, now. Must be time for me to go to bed.

Hehe, sleep well…

Well, we are quite interested in a group of our own. If you need any information, plz contact us.
