Can't get Jmonkey engine to even start up!

Subject: Re: total failure of the jmonkey engine sdk to even start

I have down loaded and installed all the java installations you have then downloaded java monkey

left the start jmonkey when install finishes checkbox checked and finnished the installation.

Jmonkey engine fails to launch.

Attempt to launch from desktop icon is futile.

I have uninstalled - re down loaded - reinstalled.

Attempted to open the exe from the windows folder.

No error boxes No evidence of life.

post the console output when running from command line

Hi Normen

You posted helpfully with ‘blubberguts’ I took those solutions and applied them successfully.

Thanks.

Now I follow the advice online about starting a sample projrct called hellow world and perhaps foolishly im expecting an editor type environmrnt like ‘visual basic’ But I get

Nothing
Well Its a two windowed screen with aparently no way to input. The advice on the forums seems irrelevant as nothing works as described.
Two days wasted on this DUD is how Im thinking now.
I see great accomplishments such as the dreadnought project but i can' put in one line of code, why should it be such a problem does JAVA Suck.

Ill give it three more hours then I kill it.

Windows Run Box thingy

“C:Program Filesjmonkeyplatformbinjmonkeyplatform.exe”

Then the green graphic with the monkey

then a warning about java is missing and required to run some net bean modules

( wouldent it be easier if you used ‘normal’ programming descriptions of these components for the convienenceof us who don’t speek the hip trendy jargon of the sales team )

Please use the jdkhome command line option

if I need them they should already be available
Where is a list and description of command line options.

AAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!

Ummm…

I’ve read and re-read your posts over 5 times now, and I’ve come to realize that you’re apparently getting upset about not getting the help you need to resolve the issue, but you’re not helping us support your issue by posting any helpful information…

Let’s examine your last post as an example:

Windows Run Box thingy
“C:Program Filesjmonkeyplatformbinjmonkeyplatform.exe”

What are you talking about? Is this what you typed into the 'Windows Run Box thingy'?

Then the green graphic with the monkey

Ok, you're running the jmonkeyplatform and the 'Splash Screen' pops up showing you that the platform is loading....

then a warning about java is missing and required to run some net bean modules

Could you be more specific with the exact error is that you're getting? This statement is way too generic..... It's like saying 'Well my computer screen turned blue and said something about the system stopping and then there were numbers and it didn't work anymore....'

( wouldent it be easier if you used ‘normal’ programming descriptions of these components for the convienenceof us who don’t speek the hip trendy jargon of the sales team )

I'm gonna get to this one later....

Please use the jdkhome command line option ——– if I need them they should already be available —– Where is a list and description of command line options.

So.... I'm assuming that 'Please use the jdkhome command line option...' is an error message that you're receiving?
'if I need them they should already be available...' < Is this a complaint about everything not being included and automatically setup for you?

Now truly analyzing what you said, can you honestly expect anybody to know exactly what it is your talking about so they can help you with your issue? You really need to consider the fact that we can't see exactly what it is you're doing all the time, so we don't have the same frame of reference as you with regards to your specific problem... Help us out a little.

Back your your quote about the 'hip trendy jargon of the sales team' ...

I haven't seen any truly unclear responses to your questions. There's nothing that has been mentioned that even a NOVICE java developer would get confused by. With that said, it seems that you're light years behind where you need to be (in terms of JAVA development) to take on a project with jME and you should probably:
A) Move on to something else (especially considering that it's apparent your panties are getting twisted and that never leads to good things)
B) Focus on growing yourself as a developer in general. (If you can't setup the development environment you have a long way to go...)
C) Both A and B

NOTE: I'm not trying to pick on you, but I'm tired of seeing posts like this on the forums....

If you don’t read the requirements before downloading what shall we do? If you had a JDK installed like every normal java developer then you’d not have to specify any path. At any instance, if you don’t know what to do its best to read the manual instead of going on pressing buttons and seeing what happens.

Ok yes Im getting angry and its not helpfull.

How much of the manual should I read - I usually read a page or two - then try out what ive just studied.

Im not a java developer.

I read the dreadnought project web page and was impressed by the simulation displayed therein.

I am an amature visual basic programmer 20yrs of quick basic before that.

I read

“Introduction to jMonkeyEngine 3.0

Install

We recommend you download the fully preconfigured jMonkeyEngine3 SDK, our Software Development Kit, which includes all jME3 libraries plus the SDK. jMonkeyEngine SDK provides convenient game development tools (Editor, Asset Packs, Converters, Scene Composer, Terrain Editor, etc) that other IDEs do not offer. Also, any java IDE can open the created ant-based projects so you can also use other IDE’s for coding while relying on the community-supported jME3 project structure including all its deployment options.”

I downloaded jmonkey and installed to find I had to install java first - I did not read this anywhere.

So I downloaded and installed to find I had to edit a conf file User_id file path that had the wrong version and was placed somewhere in a system folder it could not be written to.

So I fixed that.

then I click on the desktop icon and the splash screen pops up with the error box

Warning

The jdk is missing and is required to run some net beans modules

Please use the --jdkhome command line option to specify a JDK installation or see FaqRunningOnJre - NetBeans Wiki for more information

Disable modules and continue / Exit

I chose disable and continue

then the Ide appears and I followed the instructions to load the sample project

Oh yes I followed the link on the warning

Can I run NetBeans using only the Java Runtime (JRE)?

Some distributions of the IDE can run on the JRE, not requiring full JDK. Concerned IDE distributions are C/C++ or PHP bundles (formerly also Ruby) which don’t require full JDK installation.

Have in mind, the full IDE distribution or any distribution which requires JDK libraries such as tools.jar and dt.jar like Java SE or Web & Java EE still need to run on full JDK installation. When you try to run such IDE distribution on JRE, you will get a warning on startup saying that many modules have to be disabled. If you continue, the IDE will come up and you’ll be able to work with it, but many standard features will be unavailable.

Moreover, if you are running IDE on JRE and would like to install any plugin requiring JDK libraries via Tools|Plugins, Plugin Manager will prevent you from installing that plugin.

What to do if I’m running IDE on JRE and I need to use plugins requiring full JDK installation?

1.install full JDK

2.either edit /etc/netbeans.conf

1.unmark netbeans_jdkhome

2.link to JDK location e.g. /usr/local/share/java/jdk1.6.0_07/

3.or use --jdkhome command-line option e.g. ./bin/netbeans --jdkhome /usr/local/share/java/jdk1.6.0_07/

Applies to: NetBeans 6.5+

Platforms: All
__________________________________________________________________

Which I did not fully understand - I have installed three java downloads for windows
a 32 bit and a 64 bit which I thought were the full instalations
and jmonkey beta

any way - following the instructions the sample project failed to load / run

I would expect the app to be set up to the extent I could run the sample project

On the download page, under “requirements”.

@macbeth

Where did you install the jdk (the exact path) and could you post the contents of your netbeans.conf?

Also, did you add the jdk path to the ‘Path’ variable under the system environment variables?

@macbeth

Also…

2.either edit /etc/netbeans.conf
1.unmark netbeans_jdkhome
2.link to JDK location e.g. /usr/local/share/java/jdk1.6.0_07/
3.or use –jdkhome command-line option e.g. ./bin/netbeans –jdkhome /usr/local/share/java/jdk1.6.0_07/

Here you're referring to *nix style system paths..... but you're running Windows 7 according to all of your other posts. I hope you're not actually using these paths when attempting to follow these steps...?

There’s been a lot of heat in this thread but I wanted to make sure there aren’t any misunderstandings…

JME is a Java library and definitely (without a doubt) requires Java programming to use. If you are unfamiliar with setting up and running a Java project then you will have lots of problems right away.

I wanted to make sure expectations were not overly high. JME is a great engine but it's definitely not a "drag and drop to make a game" type of thing.

Now Im totaly confused. is netbeans Java? why has this got beans when the other java dident ? JDK 7u2 with NetBeans 7.1 is this developement kit for java or beans ? I still havent found out what the beans are! I watched a video that said it was going to introduce me to netbeans7.1 and it got obsessed with telling me how good its “refactory” system is refactory is industrial insulation and the video dident tell me more than it was calling it find and rename function refactory.

Its Me! Im Stupid !

Im killing Java on My computer

Sorry I wasted my time on this

Java is a programming language.

Java beans are just a funny way of naming a certain type of object that you can write in Java. (Java = coffee… coffee beans, get it? No, developers aren’t very funny.)

NetBeans is a development environment for writing Java applications (basically).

jMonkeyEngine is a game engine written in Java that you use (typically) from Java.

The jMonkeyEngine SDK is a customized NetBeans installation that has tools that help you write games.

The writing of the game is still up to the person using these tools and some expectation is made that the person using these tools knows something about programming in Java.

I've actually been thinking for a while that this idea should be applied... The documentation is very thorough and reader retention would definitely increase with a simple comprehension quiz afterwards.

I was thinking, you (not you specifically) could probably setup an additional table in the database with 'Achievements' or 'Levels' for site users tied to their accounts. User's would gain these levels (or w/e) by passing quizzes tied to the documentation. Once a user had proven that he/she basically understood the content of the documentation, they would be able to make posts.

You could probably eliminate a lot of the repetitive and common sense posts by implementing this system. It could also help facilitate the creation of better documentation. For example, if multiple user's (with appropriate levels) seem to be posting about the same issue over and over again maybe that topic isn't presented very well in the documentation and should be revised for clarity?

Iunno, just an idea....
