Revisiting this (also a way so I can favorite this post and finding an old post less tedious. Exactly why are we using CrappyPress again? :P).
OT: After all this time (7 months, wow) I now realize that’s not really what I want. What I would love to have is a “spheres merge” custom mesh I guess, then animate this using @t0neg0d’s shader.

I would suggest replacing this with the GPUAnimationFactory shader I posted recently. It does everything this did a lot more. You can get it here:
