Forum spam

The recent spam seems to be mostly in the release forum.

I guess it would be good to have one or two additional moderators for this forum until the spam slows down or can be blocked.

I visit the forum pretty often, so i wouldn't mind to remove this stuff.

I highly recommend installing Akismet

+1

Have no experience with plug-ins but if DF says they work....

This one? Is somebody here using it? - Known Issues?

Yeah, I'm using it on my forum and it works pretty well.  It catches most spam, but you have to go into admin to delete the spam permanently…I guess that's a good thing though because stuff that is not spam doesn't get automatically deleted.  I still have some problems with spam that isn't caught, but Akismet does wonders for keeping it to a minimum.

I have installed akismet. But it won't work: Without Wordpress API key it does not detect viagra-test-123 (the test subject for akismet) and with API key posting takes ages but still does not detect spam :? - any pointers, df? Can you configure it?

Every spammer seems to come from a gmail account (also never saw the same account post twice). There seems to be a bit of a wave of it not just here but on other forums too, some are even blocking registrations from gmail accounts.

Isn't there a plugin that will make registering a bit harder? Captchas and the like? Ideally with different settings for different email domains.

Irrisor, I set it up with my WordPress key temporarily.  That's all I had to do on my board and it started catching everything but the odd spam messages that aren't really spam…still not sure the purpose to those.

Llama, the problem is that even with captcha (SMF has it built-in and it's enabled on my forum), e-mail confirmation, banning IPs, hosts, etc. they're still getting through.  If gmail would resolve their issues with letting people register ten billion e-mail addresses it would probably resolve all of this.

Man, I see what you're saying about speed.  Posting is much slower on my board, but it crawls on here…I've got an idea about embedding a captcha within an SWF to keep it from being able to be cracked…I'll probably look into this over the weekend…slowing the forum to a crawl for posting just isn't an acceptable solution.

Well, the spammers would have to specifically enable cracking our captcha. If they really want to spam they always can but if you throw up just a little barrier it's usually enough to put them off. Or  do you still get a lot of spam on your own forum?

Has this been resolved already?

Do you see much spam? :)  I enabled the more advanced captcha and that seems to have curtailed the spammers.

I deleted his posts, banned his IP address, and set his house on fire…okay, I didn't do that last one, but sometimes I wish I could.

MagicOPromotion seems to be a bot, posting nonsense (yet somehow relevant in the context of the thread) on the forum with links in its 'signature' to a spam bot site.

This user should be deleted.

Perhaps an experimental AI?

I don't have rights to remove a user. anyone else do?

Alas, neither do I…odd, I can change just about every setting in admin but I can't delete a user. :o

definitely a bot, seen it on another board

I'm not even an admin so I can't get rid of him. Haha.

Alright, I've banned him from posting anymore.
