[jME Game] Story ideas

Here is a table of story ideas we have so far:

Code Name Author
Proxy wars Vardamir
Paranoia DarkPhoenixX
The Restless Sea of Mankind hedkandi

To start this game project, we need some ideas to choose from. If you have a good idea for a story, post it here.

Here are some rules:
The story idea should have 3 sections:

Introduction
A short overview of the big picture.

Who or what will the player be
Will the player be like an all controlling god, or will he be an actor in the world

Goals
What is the motivation for the player to play the game, what does he want to reach.

For example:
Introduction
"We always thought we would be alone in this universe. But we were wrong. Not only were we not alone in our universe, but our universe wasn't the only one existing. Our scientists found out a way to leave our universe and discover new worlds. Worlds, with new rules. Laws of nature suddenly became irrelevant, and we had to learn from the beginning. But we wanted to conquer those new worlds, because we needed space and resources. If only we had known, what would happen to us there...."

Who or what will the player be
Player is the leader of an expedition group and gives commands to team members. He builds teams, hires new team members and he also goes on some exploration trips

Goals
Bring peace to the new world. Discover more new worlds. Learning new laws of nature in those world. Discover new life forms...

This is a good format. It might take a while to get some ideas though.

Just for a second there I thought you were Captain Kirk

Maybe we should also add a point "Features".

At this point, where we stand, a story isn't necessary!

First thing, we shall collect the Features, Concepts(Weapons…and and and) and try to finish the basic!

I would like some monster game, where the survivors battle inside a big city. Simple story, nothing complex, but great potential.

This is my oppinion so far^^

That's why we make a plot or story first.  We don't want to make a gun FPS and then decide it's gonna be a fantasy RPG.

I'm all for making up a minigenre, anything that would easily show off the nice effects jme can do.

To...go...where...no man...has...gone before. KAAHN!

Seriously, yes it's always good to start out with a story, in a way it does define the genre or scope of the game. You can say even pong or pacman have a sort of story behind them.

Yes, its Bill Shatner, but it's not James T. Kirk. It's Denny Crane! ;)
I was imagining the trailer video of our game, when writing down this text. But hey, this is not a real idea, but only an example.

At this point, story is the most important thing to have. It gives us a frame, where we can discuss the features afterwards. It doesn't make much sense to discuss about laser guns, when we will have a medieval story in the end.
And if we can't find a story here, we can't create a game. That simple!
Also story is important for all contributors, so that they know, what it is all about. So nobody would come up with the idea of billboards showing some commercials for soft drinks, when the story plays inside a human organism, or in a tron-like environment...

the story itself doesn't matter that much, imho - the "universe" in which the game takes place is.

I JUST CANT DO IT CAPTAIN,THE ENGINESS, I DONT,HAVE,THE POWEEERR!

Sorry I had to, too much talk of captain kirk there.

SomeOne should write a post in a big site like http://www.gamedev.net, inviting game designers for this project and artists in http://www.blender.org else I will write a story about monkeys. Move.

It's simple.

Vardamir IS William Shatner

Well here's a thought… develop a game that is compatible with the startrek universe… and then make a star-trek mod for it… should not break any copyright issues? I have seen star-trek lotr etc mods in most games I play and no-one seems to complain

It break copyright issues, but nobody cares!

As long as nobody complains, you can publish, but if they don't like it, then you must stop.

In german I know a proverb: "Wo kein Kl

why so serious, DarkPhoenixX ?

Let's put a smile in your face. haha }:-@

Don't you see my smile?! ^^

Come closer, I won't bite, serious!

I think we need at least one monkey inside the game or we are doomed^^

Ok, one monkey, but that's it.  8)

But lets get back on topic. We need some story ideas. That don't have to be full blown novels, just a quick overview of what to imagine...

so, come on, i know you all have great ideas, burried deep down in your brains...

Well they do care, even before publishing...especially when there's a big-name game coming out. There was a halo RTS mod that was shut down after Halo Wars was announced, and a few years back LucasArts got into a tussle with a browser-based star wars MMO (Star Wars: Combine), that was settled as long as Combine didn't make money, and linked to the lucasarts website if I remember right.

There are certainly tons of mods of copyrighted movies/games out there, but the high profile ones may get picked on. Even though this would be open source, it may run into some problems...I'd stay clear away from any copyrighted material just to be safe, so you never get yourself into a position where you have to stop...if this project ever gets anyway, that really puts a real downer on the project.

Good info.

I am still making a star-trek mod for my own game. And maybe a Stargate one :P And maybe Andromeda one... And Battlestar Galactica... and... well.. all of them. I doubt they will all complain loud enough.

If the system is easily moddable then adding content or switching it around becomes easy. And it will really appeal to the public as well, as all these series have a big following. Potential gamers.

Obviously I did not bring this up only because I plan to try this... Wanted to just offer it up as an idea for this project. However it is safer of-course to try and do something original. Sorry I cannot be of more help with that.

I personally like original, but that doesn't mean you can't incorporate elements (story or aesthetic) into your own idea. When you boil down a lot of the fiction thats out there, nothing's really all "that original". Of course there are degrees ranging from "vaguely similar" to the blatant :stuck_out_tongue:

I have personally never bother about the story in any game other than Baldurs Gate and Half Life. So I think gameplay is more important to determine first.
