Rendering a galaxy... any suggestions?

I’m working on a space RTS/FPS game and I’m at a point where I need to be able to render a galaxy. It would have to be an actual system or something, because the player will be inside the galaxy for the duration of the game, with several points where the player sees it from the outside. At this point, I’m sorta thinking something at the center that glows, then iterating along the spiral arms. The distance I would skip along the spiral path would be smaller at the center, then get larger as the iteration gets further along the arm, thus giving the appearance of a thicker center and more defined outer arms. That’s just my thoughts so far, if anyone else has some possible input as to actually rendering the stars, or just additions or suggestions in general, I’d love to hear them!
