Shadow/Lighting problem on character

I'm making a small rpg where the character can run around on the map.  Well the problem is, when he turns a certain direction(a range of about 90degrees), he becomes completely black and you can no longer see his texture.  I feel like this is a lighting issue that can be solved easily, I just can't figure it out. :?

This is what i have for lighting, please let me know if anyone can help just make the shadow go away so I can always see his texture.

    DirectionalLight dr = new DirectionalLight();

    dr.setDiffuse(new ColorRGBA(1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f));

    dr.setAmbient(new ColorRGBA(0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f, .5f));

    dr.setDirection(new Vector3f( 1, -1, 1));

    dr.setShadowCaster(true);

    dr.setEnabled(true);

    PointLight pointLight = new PointLight();

    pointLight.setDiffuse( new ColorRGBA( 0.75f, 0.75f, 0.75f, 0.75f ) );

    pointLight.setAmbient( new ColorRGBA( 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f, 1.0f ) );

    pointLight.setLocation( new Vector3f( 500, 100, 500 ) );

    pointLight.setEnabled( true );

    /* Attach the light to a lightState and the lightState to rootNode. */

    LightState lightState = display.getRenderer().createLightState();

    lightState.setEnabled(true);

    lightState.setGlobalAmbient(new ColorRGBA(.2f, .2f, .2f, 1f));

    lightState.attach(dr);

    lightState.attach(pointLight);

    rootNode.setRenderState(lightState);

    FogState fs = display.getRenderer().createFogState();

    fs.setDensity(0.5f);

    fs.setEnabled(true);

    fs.setColor(new ColorRGBA(0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f, 0.5f));

    fs.setEnd(100);

    fs.setStart(65);

    fs.setDensityFunction(FogState.DF_LINEAR);

    fs.setApplyFunction(FogState.AF_PER_VERTEX);

    rootNode.setRenderState(fs);

    CullState cs = display.getRenderer().createCullState();

    cs.setCullMode(CullState.CS_BACK);

    cs.setEnabled(true);

    rootNode.setRenderState(cs);

I also have a skybox if that matters.  Let me know if you need more info about the game, anything to help!! -THANKS

Seems like the ambient might be too low?  Have you tried boosting the global ambient?

Ok,

I tried that and nothing happened.  So, is there a way to remove any shadows on the texture of the player or the character-node itself?

He completely blacks out and adding more lights in the scene doesn't seem to help.

I looked at the Lesson9 sample game and I tried setting the lights just as it does and I still had the problem.

Note: the shadows have nothing to do with the angle at which the camera is at, but the rotation of the player.

anymore input would help,

Thanks!
