Some general game structure questions

It took me a bit to get an idea about how to do some essential things in JME but have got some general questions:

do i have to learn a gui library like Fenggui to be able to handle all menus, huds inventory’s etc?

how do u change game states like loading different levels or going from a welcome screen to a character creation screen then onto the first level? (im guessing by having different trees of nodes and attaching them to the root node as needed?)
