The main developer of jME2 released a pre-alpha version then left to develop another engine called Ardor3D. From then on, people contributed fixes and minor feature improvements on the Contribution forum.

It's not included, it comes as an extension called jME-physics.

Does this mean that there is no lead developer on JME or did someone else take over?

I kind of think of basix as the leader however as long as senior members such as momokofan, nymon, core-dump, DarkFrog, llama, MrCoder as well as others such as blaine, gouessej, JOC, jjmontes, Trussell, [IR]Radek and many others continue to improve the community and engine; I see jme in a very good place with constant enthusiastic community contribution, jME is my engine of choice  :D

jme is currently pretty much a purely community driven project.
