Structuring Destructible/Modifiable Terrain

Hi are there any tutorials/suggestions anyone can offer me on how I would go about structuring terrain that is "destructible". Basically my current idea is to make the terrain out of a series of 3 dimensional arrays separated into blocks for fast read/write, which will be broken down further into map regions. If support exists however for something of this sort then that would be great.


I don't think there is any support integrated for something like that, however it should be possible without problems, if you accept, that the block size must be kinda large if you want current computers to handle it.
