while changing all the copyright dates I realized how monstrous the code base can be 
I just added a little, very minimalistic, Development Conventions section to the Getting Started page of the User's Guide. Probably won't have much effect in the short-term, since existing developers won't be reading that page, but it should improve consistency and reduce file-typing and encoding errors in the long term.
