The spammers strike back

Today I deleted 3-4 spammer accounts. They trick you into thinking its an actual person, by using posts from other forums, and once they have 3 posts they will put 2 ads in their sig.

What can we do? Are they somehow beating the captcha? Should we start to ban IP ranges?

I know we have askimet installed
I dun really know for sure about that. Yes it says it's there, but obviously it's not working and it's not listed among plugins either. I don't think SMF 1.1 features Akismet out of the box. Better off trying to install that mod I think, and install the other akismet.

The field for API key was blank before... look at it now ;)

Certainly there’s been a severe influx of spambots lately. I have installed and enabled ‘Stop Forum Spam’ and with Skye’s help we could also have Akismet installed. Hopefully this would keep them at bay.

I don’t know if installing SMF 2.0 would remedy this, but we can’t really do that until we find someone to help out with theming, or else we would lose our visual integration, which I for one find very convenient and professional looking.

I know that the 'smart' spam has been a growing trend on other forums as well…  I know we have askimet installed, but it says its caught two messages to date… Not very impressive.

I just set up the 'Wordpress API Key' again, which enables Askimet… Its possible that it hasn't been set up I suppose

EDIT: oops, good timing, Erlend… If this API key doesn't seem to make it work, I'll have a visit over to the support page and do some digging…
