Uploading images to hub.jmonkeyengine.org **always** fails

I have tried uploading a profile picture, and in my previous post an image directly to hub.jmonkeyengine.org. Every single time I have tried uploading, it has failed. In posts, using imgur.com (or a different 3rd party server by adding a link and allowing it to show up as a onebox) works.

It shows that it has failed ("Image upload failed"). Are anyone else experiencing this issue? Any ideas why it always fails to upload images?

We experienced a continual problem with storage space. We just can't get enough these days. Monthly WIP threads usually pull in a ton of images, as well as all the other threads. It's more than likely something to do with that. I'm not certain whether or not a member of staff made any changes as a result.

If storage is a problem and that is why images cannot be uploaded, why not scale the images before saving them to the server? For an instance a 1024x1024 image is considerably bigger in storage size than 512x512. The trick is to scale the images without losing quality. When I post screenshots, they are often 2550x1440 - this takes up a lot of space on the server. Shrinking images that come in to a preset of sizes that saves storage capacity could be a good idea to save storage.

Facebook does this an it annoys the hell out of me. It's only my personal opinion, but I hate that. And secondly why re-create the wheel? Imgur does all kinds of stuff with images. Let it do its thing? They have albums and everything.

For posts, that is fine.

Profile pictures though, do not support imgur or similar.

If the entire page uses imgur for images, it would save storage on the page. But as per now, profile pictures still doesn't support imgur links. I see the point that scaling is annoying, as a lot of quality may be lost

I think image upload was disabled recently. Sucks, but it is a maintenance headache, so we can’t blame anyone.

Profile pics being stuck is especially unfortunate if there isn’t a workaround. Have you tried the Gravatar thing? Maybe if you set one for whatever email you used to register…

I must say It’s very much annoying that disabling image uploading also nixes profile picture uploads. And all options, gravatar included, work by uploading the picture to the forum server in the end which always fails.

That’s weird. You mean that the server sucks over the image from gravatar? Because I definitely uploaded this image directly to gravatar 100% independent of anything set on this forum.

Edit: but I see that you’re right… the image is hosted by JME. Weird that it isn’t a separate setting, though.

Yeah I assumed it got it directly without uploading it as well. Until I tested it out and it failed miserably.

I think it’s one of those failsafe things where it’s good to have the image uploaded in case gravatar is unreachable. It does however give us this sort of problems.

Perhaps we should enable server picture uploading only for profile pictures.

Iv looked at the settings and the custom avatars selection is enabled but its being over-ridden by the disable uploads option.
