Urban Galaxy Online – Test event

Greetings,

We are running the first “preview” event of our upcoming browser-based MMORPG Urban Galaxy Online, written using jMonkeyEngine, on the weekend of May 12-13.

Consider this as an unannounced “closed” test event and we would like to give the jMonkey community the opportunity to experience the “first” taste of the game.

You are most welcome to join the event at: http://play.urbangalaxyonline.com

Please consider this as an alpha test, that does not reflect the final quality of the game.

Best,

The Urban Galaxy Team

Great game! I remember seeing you guys a few years back, the fruits of labor are showing now

The gameplay is very smooth, MMO-like.

Here’s some suggestions to improve the experience:

  • When the browser is minimized or looking at another tab, the game still uses 100% CPU / GPU. I recommend throttling the update and/or disabling rendering when that happens. Remember that this is an casual / online game so the player is expected to keep it open but do other stuff while its running.
  • When the game is loaded for the first time it shows a warning dialog regarding the AppletLoader. I recommend using either your own signed certificate or using the one included in LWJGL’s AppletLoader, but then you will see it say “Publisher: LWJGL”. Either way the warning will be replaced with a more calm looking notice which is better for users.
  • Options Screen: To change game quality. Video cards vary and some can render long distances and some can’t.
  • The skybox updates at the next frame rather than at the same time when the camera changes. Try moving the camera fast and you will see the delay in the skybox update

Hey cool! That looks great!

What time will the sign-in be enabled this weekend?

Looking forward to trying it out.

Wow, your site looks/is amazing!! Love the navigation and effects! Also, can’t wait to try out the game, thanks!

The test event is now open.

Feel free to join and try out the game!

downloading now

Edit: its just stuck on the second loading part at 11% loading

Can try to reload and if it fails can you check the java console for an error message?

reloaded still getting the same issue

Here’s the output from the java console

wezrule, thanks for the log, we are investigating it.

One last question: Can you provide Browser version and Java version (e.g. OpenJDK, Oracle, 32bit or 64bit) so that we can replicate your PC settings as close as possible?

Also, you can you delete the folder c:UsersNAMEurbangalaxy and try again or tell us whether this folder was created or not? I am trying to understand whether the issue has to do with signing of the applet.

In any case thank you for your patience. You are the first to report that issue and we really appreciate your feedback.

Oracle Java 7 Update 4 and Firefox 12.0 both latest versions, i downloaded them both today on my new computer :P. The folder did indeed exist, i deleted it, tried again but now its stuck at 3%. Tried with internet explorer 8, still the same

ok after a few more attempts, finally got it to work

Firefox 12.0, this error after I log in:

Thanks Sploreg for the feedback,

We have fixed the css issue. The second issue (An unbalanced tree…) has to do with the Java deployment script as provided by Oracle. We will try some alternatives after the test event.

Did those issues prevent you from running the game?

Thanks for community give away.

Isn’t there any desktop client? Downloading the whole thing over and over again is a bit of a pain.

@iamcreasy The final version of the game will interact with HTML elements, so it designed to be running inside the browser. All the gaming data are cached in your computer, so downloading happens only on updates or when accessing first time visited areas.

Great job!! It works fine (FireFox 12.0).

Just reached Lv. 5 with my character (you can’t get any higher for now, right? seems like the XP are being clamped) and want to state that game, client (Mac OSX 10.7, ATI) and applet (Win7 x64, Intel GMA ^^) worked flawlessly  Thank you!

@kinix its feels good.

What’s on the road map?

Yep, works fine on OSX Lion. Great work, very polished. Feels like a real game

Edit: Btw, “tab” for selecting units in front of you might be nice, I have the same issue as in World of Warcraft, I just don’t like point-and-click selection ^^

I first wanted to say:

“The loading bar should be tweaked a little. It’s almost impossible for me to see that it moves.”

but I just missed allowing lwjgl to be run. Maybe a hint would be nice at this very first loading bar.

I would like if the ship would bounce of the level bounce in a way 2 magnetic objects do. That would disturb the gameplay a bit less.

For an alpha test this looks really well!

Edit:

System information:

Intel Xeon E3 1230

GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Win 7

FF 12.0

Java 7 and 6 both installed, I think 6 is used in browser^^
