jMonkey Engine seems like such a great resource/tool, yet it doesn't seem to have much interest or life… This is just what I gather from browsing the forums, but why does there seem to be a lack of interest? Are there newer/better/simpler tools out there now.
Just curious…
Yes, I think there is so much information on these forums that unless your are trying something out of the norm, there is almost no reason to post any question.
If there are posts from like 2004 or 2005, should I be concerned that they won't be relevant now or that jME has changed enough that those suggestions won't work anymore?

Well yes, quite often... But if you think creatively and port the code to jme 2, they are still useful.
I don't think there are millions of people writing games in Java, and of those that are most are not doing advanced 3D. In that sense it caters to a fairly small niche.
But also I think there's something in the saying that those who are doing the most are saying the least. What I mean by that is it amazes me how many times someone who hasn't posted that much suddenly shows up with a really nice piece of work. Doubtless there are a good few out there that we never see also.
Most of the time (certainly not all, but most), people post because they need something, or they are replying to someone who needs something. People who are just getting stuff done often don't have any reason to post.
All that said it does seem like there's been a drop off in the last few months, which is a shame.
That makes a lot of sense. I hope that there are people working on great projects right now. I also hope they post in the showcase so that everyone can see the possibilities that jME offers.
Also… the number of guests on the forum is at all times several times higher than the number of registered posters. These people only read, never post… But I bet most of them still use jME
I can believe that. These forums have a wealth of information if you dig enough. Due to academics, I haven't been able to invest much time into my own project other than pen and paper design and research (forums, wiki, reading the some jme source code daily).
Even though Java isn't as mainstream as other languages for regular game development, jMonkey I think is somewhat well known (or at least, brought up in discussions). I've seen it mentioned quite a bit when I do searches into some specific topics I can't find on these boards (or non related to Java, often topics that degenerate into language flame wars heh), and end up in another forum's discussion thread and lo and behold jmonkey gets mentioned.

yes ! Heart of Oak is a proof of that :)
btw with Bolidz I always hesitate to show progress, it's probably because like others I wait to have something impressive, or nevertheless try to XD
