Forum for projects

Hi,

i suggest to create a new forum for projects. In this forum, people can present their ideas or even their already started works. The purpose of this forum should be to find help for the particular projects.

If its possible, this forum should be divided into sub-forums for each genre/category:

Projects

  |-- FPS

  |-- Strategy

  |-- RPG

  |-- Adventure

  |-- Simulation

  |-- …

  |-- Other

In the post to this forum, the developers can ask for help, and interested developers or artist can offer their help.

This suggestion was inspired by this thread: http://www.jmonkeyengine.com/jmeforum/index.php?topic=5308.0

Personally I think that just one forum will be enough. There are not so many vacancy offers as to need more, IMHO.

But I believe that the idea is really nice.

Regards.

I agree.  Adding something as simple as a "Help Wanted" section under "Other" should be fine.  Just include the info about your project - RPG, FPS, MMO, etc. in your subject and description such as:

Artist wanted for Space-based FPS Shooter

Programmer wanted for physics simulation assistance for MMORPG

SGF (Single Green Frog) seeks mate for quiet evenings on lilypad

And so on.  I also agree that this is a good idea and could help a few "lost" projects get completed.  Perhaps you break it down one more level into those seeking work/assistance for free, and those willing to pay for it.  This way artists and developers looking for work (for pay) could go directly to that section.  Note that it would not be a place for them to advertise (as I know that is frowned upon in these forums) simply that those with more commercial interests and willing to pay for help could post for it, and those looking for work would know where to find it.

But this forum could serve other purposes as well. You are right, if it's only for seeking help, a forum "Help wanted" could be enough. But i think it would be more efficient with such a genre based structure. For example, if a developer is willing to take part in an already existing project, he will likely have some idea about where his interersts lie. So he looks around in the forum of the genres he is interested in. He gets an overview of all the projects in this area.

Or someone wants to post his own project, he can do it where it best fits in, and it doesnt go down in a vast number of unrelated stuff.

So this forum could also be a showcase and a monitor whats going on in the community

A forum for that already exists: the User Showcase.

And still I think that the amount of ongoing projects isn't big enough as to justify a forum per genre.

not evencounting the fact that most people are working on the same type of project, being either RPG or FPS.

And that's a waste of talent, because they all do the same instead of comibining those projects. I think a developer should first try to find an already existing project that meets his ideas somehow and join that, than creating his own, and then get stuck because he cant do it alone or he does not find enough people that help.
User Showcase is fine, but its unstructured. This forum could be underneath "User ShowCase"

I like the idea, and I would say go for it. However, I'm not that sure it will be implemented, seeing how this forum is mostly about the engine and related stuff, intead of just being another game coding forum.

I could set one up myself in 5 mins though, if the need is really there and link it from here, thus keeping the general game coding stuff and the engine related stuff seperated, if this is something people really want that is. The link to my forum could then be stickied or something like that.

You're right, maybe its a good idea to separate it from this forum. I would say its about gaining momentum. There are a lot of good engines out there, and a developer, seeking an engine of choice will probably browse through all the projects, using the engine, so he can say, if it can fulfill what he is expecting. When i was looking for an engine, i first took a look at OGRE. Its really looking very good, but unfortunatly, its C++, and i wanted Java. So i found jME. Great engine as well. I was fully convinced, when i saw the demos from JadeStone, which are really impressive.

Now, that i know what engine to use for my planned project, i would love to know, if there already is a similar project out there, that i can join, or if it would be a better idea to start from scratch. If so, i'd love to have a common place to introduce that project, to help me find people that are willing to join.

Maybe this is beyond the scope of this forum, but it may also be a evolutionary step to extend the community.

OK,

I'm installing phpbb now. Once done, I'll setup the project forum there. In the future I might even see to reviving my own custom build forum. It has the ability to let users create their own groups, with each group having it's own (closed) forum. This could be usefull for all those projects out there. Give them their own forum, but still centralized, if you know what I mean.

Eventually, this might evolve into a real website, but this mostly depends on the amount of time I'm able to put into it.

Ok, I created the forum, the location (for now) is: http://www.ractoc.com/gameprojects/forum.

There are currently 3 forums in 1 category.

Cool, i've already registered. Now lets see how this evolves.
