Mac Woes

Have had a few mac users attempt to try out my game, but they are not really tech types and i dont know the first thing about a mac

Can someone with a mac pls try and run my game on http://www.forthestars.com/site/play.html , the servers are running, a log.txt file will be in the current user directory equivalent and with a bit of luck will the issue will be logged.

? can noone get in ( scary - must be a server issue )  or has noone tried ( phew, have more time to make it prettier ) ??

Just tried it on a G4 Powerbook running OSX 10.4.8 using Firefox 1.5.0.9.  My first problem was it wanted to save the jnlp file to my desktop as a .php file.  After saving it and renaming it .jnlp, I was able to launch it.  After a 33MB download, I saw "Welcome" followed by "Preparing", and then a blue screen with a black stripe across the top.  I can move a custom cursor around, but there seems to be nothing to click on.  Looking in the java console, I see no warnings or error messages:

I found no logs in my user home directory.  Hope that helps somehow!

Thanks renanse, it does help abit.

Have just added a line

nonOrthoDesktop.setCullMode( Spatial.CULL_NEVER );

hope that helps

this is what it looks like on windows

the patch is about 2meg download, hope you are able to test again

Unfortunately, I get the same results after pulling down the 2MB file.

Im so out of my depth on macs, so , thinking of getting one on ebay

Found a g4 with the following spec

Apple iMac (15" Flat Panel) G4

Software - Mac OSX 10.4

CPU Speed - 800MHz

L2 Cache - 256MB

Memory - 256MB

would it need more ram / cpu speed or is this spec ok to run say projected grid water

I think this is a really old Mac. Though, the most important features are Video Card and Video RAM, more than anything else. This computer is probably not the best, but you can look for "World Of Warcraft" requirents and if they say that iMac G4 800 can run WoW smoothly, then it can run everything else. :D

Anyway my advise is to buy something more recent, in particular in this transition time, when Apple moved to Intel Core Duo (and I red rumors that next release, towers would be based on 2 Core Quad).

Any thoughts on the mini mac - they seem quite reasonably priced ??

If you have not enough money to move to Mac remain on the PC side and start to pot aside money to buy a good Mac in the future. Mac Mini are the worst computers ever produced by Apple. They have been created for a target of users with low money capabilities and/or with poor needs. The minimum to start working is an iMac with at least an ATI Mobility inside. Currently there is also a iMac with integrated Intel GPU, but I do not recommend to buy it.

In the PC world, you have more and cheaper choices, because you can buy separated parts and assemble your computer. But do not allow yourselves to be deceived: what you pay for a high cost Mac is well spent exactly like any other computer. There is a big difference from a computer (PC or Mac) that cost about 500 $/

I dunno, Mark (mojomonk) has a Mac mini and has told me on several occassions that they are pretty nice.  Maybe not gaming machines, but good enough for development purposes.

The mini certainly isn't going to be a powerhouse, but with a 1.66 GHz Core Duo they are a pretty good buy. If you budget allows, by all means get an iMac (or better), but if ~$600 is all you want to spend, the mini is not a waste of money or anything. It does come with an Intel GMA 950 graphics card, which isn't going to be great, but should work.

 I happy to hear this good opinions about Mac Mini. And I am happy to be wrong because this means that all Mac computers are good computers.

I have been probably too critical with Mac Mini. }:-@

Eh, eh, eh! Yeah!

Though, to be serious: I am actually happy to read such good review about Mac Mini, from mojomonk.
I am a Mac fan and, of course, happy Mac user (one of that strange people so called "Power Users" :D ; now, unfortunately, we cannot call ourself with that name any more :'( ... Damned Intel! :P ), but I my favorite machines are Mac towers or Mac Books (old Power PC or Power Book XD ). I did not think that Mac Mini could be a good platform, but the opinion of mojomonk, for me, changed everything.

I see…so it's mojo that's spreading the heresy…I'll deal with him.  }:-@

I'm pretty happy with my mac mini core duo.

It's mostly a server, never really liked the mac UI.

YMMV, but I have had 2 crashes (hfs+ bug apparently (nasty!)), and I am currently working on my 3rd crash - though this seems to be only the UI (SuperDuper, cloning hard drive to network drive (22GB+). The UI is stale and repaint it all weird.)

Jan  9 00:24:35 mini crashdump[19243]: Finder crashed

Jan  9 00:24:41 mini crashdump[19243]: crash report written to: /Users/matzon/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Finder.crash.log

sigh

@Matzon - It seams more a Finder crash :stuck_out_tongue: than a UI crash. Anyway it is strange! This should not cause a Quartz stale.

oh, it did:

I tried to restart Finder, but I couldn't get it up and running - so in the end I had to restart the computer :frowning:

Do you know how to restart the Finder? It could help if it happens again. Or you could kill the Finder using Terminal or the Activity Monitor, it should restart itself, once killed.
