I started with Sonic and Shinobi on Master System. And when I managed to get some money I spent very frustrating games of Shinobi (Arcade) and Ghosts & Goblins.
Then it came the PC (I had a strange Exelvision box formerly). I enjoyed Loom, Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island… Street Fighter was about to come I think.
Wolfestein was curious. But the game that really hit it was Doom for me. I spent hours playing over the modem. I even organised a “lan” party (4 boxes conected in 2 pairs :D).
I believe Quake was the starting of gaming as we know it today. Internet Cafes sprouted everywhere. Multiplayer was unleashed.
Apart from Graphic Adventures, I would mention Halflife 1, and later 2, as the best I have played in terms of atmosphere, gameplay and quality. Kudos to Valve.
But there are others, many others… so, so many… :’(
I started with River Raid on the C64
But the best game of all times is Ultima 7, I played the whole series but that one I replay at least every two years.
I love all kinds of RPGs (even pen and paper ones) but in the past few years I have discovered my love for innovative indie games like Darwinia or Penumbra.
These were inspiration for my current game:
Elastomania (Action Supercross)
Ski Stunt
Excite Bike
Well, I guess I was mostly into RPGs ala Squaresoft:
- Final Fantasy VII and newer
- Zelda (Nintendo Gameboy times)
- Secret of Mana, - Evermore, etc (SNES)
Now I'm into the Shooters:
- Half Life II, Episodes
- Doom 3
- Far Cry
- Crysis
- …
How many people will hate me if I say World of Warcraft?
We won't hate you… you will simply be stating again that you just became of age… For us oldies around here, we have had a time to experience the evolution of 1-bit colors to 32-bits
Haha. Well, I have played some of the games you mentioned. The guy who almost failed college because of D2? Yeah well I almost failed 7th grade because of it!
WoW was really the one that made me realize I could make games and that I would want to, but games I loved are like all of the Star Trek games I have (like 3 or 4 I think), Starcraft, Warcraft, D2, Frogger, Splinter Cell… I spent a lot of time on all of those games
… Man, I love this guy…
Uh I saw quite good games on your lists!
My first game, the first Prince of Persia when I was 3-4, I still think it's an excellent game which has a lot of interesting game mechanics. Sonic and Shinobi lol, those rocked. Also theres Deus Ex, heavily underrated game, IMO it's awesome, played it on harder difficulty in a perfectionist way as suggested by a really good walktrough I once found. Max exp, kill every enemy, save every ally, no using ammo (I only used 12 bullets, including grenades and rockets, the guide used 13), and having always the best items which forced you to use those explosives to open some boxes at early game, having max money I really enjoyed it playing like that and the storyline rocked. Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo all rock (WoW doesn't :P). I don't like MMORPG as they are now, I think they are boring, until we get a real-time-online fighting like Soul Calibur…
But my list is:
-Prince of Persia old one (fighting against your shadow was brilliant, remember or should I explain?), and also Sands Of Time because of that rewind feature while playing.
-Chrono Trigger (best RPG ever?)
-Final Fantasy VII (story, characters, music, everything)
-Deus Ex (great game play, lots of option, rich world, rich interactions)
-Civilization (great idea, great game)
-Diablo I and II and exp (rpg as something different, addictive, fun, complex item system on diablo II at least)
-Black & White (innovation)
-Simcity - The Sims (games as toys concept was revolutionary)
-Warcraft & Starcraft (the best RTS games out there)
There are probably other worth mention but I can't recall now. CYA
I loved Prince of Persia. I'm actually about to install SimCity just for fun
Prince of Persia was amazing, and very difficult. One of the games I'm most proud to have finished. The fight with the shadow was pretty obvious to me, I (luckily) beat it on my first attempt (which was great, because climbing the whole level was a pain).
I then thought that Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame, wouldn't be as good. But it was worth every penny. The moment when you take the flame, though, took me ages to figure out. Ages. I was so frustrated… Very nice game too.
Sands of Time, in my opinion, was up to the expectations. Really nice, fluid, entertaining game. What else can you ask… They wisely moved it more into platforms (ala Tomb Raider) but quicker. Not as difficult, by far, as the previous ones.
Johan Mechner (if I recall correctly) is one of the best game designers ever. I would put him along with Ron Gilbert and John Carmack in the Game Designer Olympus.
I'm a youngin, so I was referring specifically to the Sands of Time
