I've been looking arround for a good 3d modelling program and concluded Blender is a good tool to make models with.
However, what I wish to know is which 3d modelling program has the most support with jME? At the moment I only want to create models but later on I might want to add animations as well. Should I stick with Blender or do you advise a different program?
Im also curious about other jME users using a modelling program and their overal experiences while importing their models.
Thanks!
if you search the board you will find some threads similar to this one.
it depends on how much you want to spend on the software and which software you know better. some tools are great for modelling (like wings3d) but you can't create animations with them.
if you don't want to spend any money, you could try a wings3d + blender combination.
as for "compatibility with jme": jme can load several file formats so as long as your software can export to one of those formats (collada for example), you shouldn't have any problem.

Yea, I realised this topic might be seen as the 100th about Blender v.s. any other modelling tool. But that isnt really what im asking. What I'm more interested in to know is if Blender can provide in all the needs required to have a model (with possible animations) in jME.
I assume you're using Wings3d and I'll check it out. Why did you use Wings3d though? What did it provide that Blender couldn't provide?
Also, you mentioned Collada. A quick search learned me that it's an attempt to create a universal format that can be used between multiple modelling programs. I suppose that would make it -the- advised format to use with jME?
Thanks!
i didn't do any modeling lately, but i suppose blender could provide all you need for creating and animating your models.
i use wings3d because of the very nice workflow and because i'm more comfortable with the interface(clean, simple). imho it's one of the best polygonal modeling tools. and it's small: 6MB
about your collada question: i suppose yes, with collada you're on the safe side.
I prefer Wings3d to Blender for modeling, any day. (True that am a *cough* expert with wings...used at many jobs...where you actually learn to do the things yes or yes... )
I also prefer the ui, by far.
Still, IMHO Blender is the best tool around for character animation, for free, I mean(wings only models). And now can bake lightmaps, among a load of other things.
Is also really nice for prerrendered intros, in avi or whatever, as has a lot of power, like particles, hair rendering, etc.
Blender should suffice for most game engines out there. Using the wings+blender combo, is also my preference, but to each his own.
There are user made python scripts for exporting md5 from blender, that work like charm, and I proved they work nicely in JME. As well, though a while since I was here last time (hope to remember to come back ) , I guess exporting as ASE (user made plugin) , OBJ, LWO, or another may do.
Still, if you're wanting certain features in your game, you may wish some extra coded tools, or utilities, so to add reflection maps, vertex colors...in case needed, of course. You may need then to export apart those maps, so can make an editor or sth, to add em. There's maybe some static format supporting that. A while since I was here...IE: maybe already collada reached that point...and collada is certainly gonna stay with blender, is open format...and they keep improving it build to build...
But yep, you can do a fully featured game with Blender (and skills, hehe) I will not model with it, though...They'd need to change the UI from scratch, but maybe we may have an option in 2.5 or some later.
For animation, Boneheat and some other nice features are already in latest release.
