Very pretty 1up. How do you manage to have so many trees in the scene without loosing much framerate? Good looking vegetation makes a huge difference for the games impression.
It’s not so different than the regular trees… in fact, block for block, the pine trees use fewer polys than the other trees. It’s just that they are usually bigger since they can get up to almost 20 meters tall. So there are a lot more blocks in the large pine tree.
100+ FPS is on my GTX 460 with the game at 192 meter clip. For the most part they are just textured and lit triangles like everything else.
The pine trees do slow things down a little I think… at least that’s my impression. But as I said, they have a lot more blocks. I also upped the number of trees generated per area… and that’s probably the biggest impact. If I ever come up with a clever way to do LOD for the really far trees then that might help. With the way I batch things, it’s kind of tricky.
…but they look really nice. I’m willing to do what it takes to keep them.

Skye, that was awfully specific. Do you have issues yet to be resolved? :)
