XBox Kinect as motion capture

Hello,

Maybe some of you heard of people hacking in their xbox 360 kinect console and creating new ways to play their games or interact with reality. Take a look:

We can use kinect for motion capture.

It will save so much time, and in the time saved we can do more and complex animations.

We should totally do it. >.>

Wow, totally awesome. It’s inevitable, I’ll have to cave in and buy a kinect soon. Not that I’m gonna be able to hack it in any way, but I just gotta start getting the feel of this thing if I want to keep referring to myself as an aspiring game designer. Shit.

Wow#2, affordable motion capture. That is huge. I knew it would come sooner or later, but I didn’t think Microsoft would be the ones to spearhead it (I don’t think they thought so either). Give it a year, and human-skeleton animations might be something anyone can do.

Trying to hack something right now. Word of advice: do not buy xbox bundle with kinetic. It has custom plugs and you can’t connect it to a PC.

I did that mistake.

Ehm, I'm not following at all. I haven't been keeping up with their product lines. My older brother has an Xbox 360 already. I plan to pump iron all Christmas, overpower him, steal the Xbox and just buy a Kinect for it. Any holes in that plan? Is there some special new Xbox 360 that I don't know about, that plays more nicely with Kinect?

Also, check it out everybody, there's already progress being made with the Ogre format!

Well there not so much kinect games.. and in order to use a kinect on your xbox u need the new kinect ready xbox 360 slim http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-250GB-Console/dp/B003O6JJKY , tho im not sure if the plugs changed as rallu said.. and its not really hacking.. microsoft allows it. You plug it in ur usb(if it has the usb output) and install the drivers.

Yes. They made bundle that's called Microsoft Xbox 360 S - Kinect Edition which has this custom plug that has power and data going in one cable. So buy separate Kinetic package (made for older xboxes) and everything will be fine.

I think I’m going to start working on getting interface from this to Jme.

edit: and now that I read the first post I can see that it has link to openni already…

This is leading to a lot of broken vases, lamps or TVs…

Imagine a monkey trying to motion capture a round house kick in his living room in front of his kinect…

Nothing good can come out of this … :stuck_out_tongue:

Awesome, was looking for affordable mocap solutions for a long time now.

What, where?! We are just about to start working jna or jni implementation in here. Something ready would be nice to have.

idk, they said it on the java blog, its an audio blog so they didnt include a link

Edit: maybe this one? libfreenect/wrappers/java at master · OpenKinect/libfreenect · GitHub

Really cool stuff!

I have no idea what i would do with one atm, but i want it anyway!

This is totally awesome!.

What a coincidence I got one last week. Fortunately they had a nice offer with the xbox S and a sepparated kinect device (with the old xbox connection) all in one pack.

I had to survive some aggro here, but now this is ready for some fun.

“In January 2011, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the BBC that the PC platform will at some point receive formal Kinect support.[69] On February 21, 2011 Microsoft announced that it would release a non-commercial Kinect software development kit (SDK) for Windows in Spring 2011.[70][71][72]”
